Three persons were detained in connection with the killing of one labourer and injuring seven of his co-workers engaged for the construction of the St Xavier’s Girls Hostel in the South West Khasi Hills district.
The incident took place on Wednesday night when eight construction labourers were attacked by masked miscreants.
A criminal case was registered at the Mawkyrwat police station.
Taking strong cognizance of the incident, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma assured that the perpetrators of the crime will not be allowed to go scot-free.
“We will ensure that more aggressive action is taken so that in the future these kinds of incidents don’t happen and the people who are involved in this as I said will be brought to justice,” he said.
Condemning the incident, home minister Lahkmen Rymbui said, “I totally sympathize with the family and I condemn this act of violence against unarmed people who come here with all valid documents and valid permission to do their job.”
Asked, the minister said around 15-20 masked persons were involved in the attack of the labourers.
He said police are still on the lookout for the miscreants and within no time all will be brought to book.
Rymbui, who is also the education minister, said that St Xavier’s College had already met him last month informing about the construction work.
“They have apprised me that they need some labourers from outside, so I have told them to do all the formalities like labour license as per required by the law and they have complied all those necessary things and in fact, they have also taken the confidence of the district administration and locals there. Unfortunately inspite of going beyond (their reach), this incident has happened,” he said.
The minister said that he has sent an Inspector General of Police to supervise and ensure the culprits are nabbed at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (R) DM Sangma informed that during the course of the investigation, three persons have been detained and further investigation is being conducted to identify the persons involved in this instant case.
