Two persons lost their lives and over three thousand people were affected during this ongoing Monsoon season in just one week. West Garo Hills District in Meghalaya continues to be the most affected district in the state.
According to Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA), the South West Monsoon has affected 42 villages in the six districts across the state. The most affected District is West Garo Hills where over 24 villages and more than 2,825 people were affected.
In East Khasi Hills District, one person by the name Probino Warbah, 48 years from Tynring, East Khasi Hills drowned on June 7 and his body was recovered on June 10 from Wah Umrynjah, Mawlai.
In West Khasi Hills too, one person by the name Kantly Maram, 49 years, from Nongkroh Rambrai under Nongstoin Block lost his life due to Lightning strike.
In East Jaintia Hills over 107 people were affected during the ongoing monsoon season. Landslides and flash floods have been common in this district. Around 3.45 ha of crops were also damaged.
In South West Khasi Hills around 88 people from 11 villages were affected and 13 houses were also damaged.
In North Garo Hills, the Resubelpara Mendipathar road was submerged under water due to incessant rainfall. The rainfall has damaged several roads, many were submerged.
The damages were also reported from West Khasi Hills district.
Earlier, heavy rains washed away a portion of the road at Siju’s Darang Boldak village in South Garo Hills which has affected the road communication link between Nangalbibra and Baghmara. This had disrupted the vehicle movement from Williamnagar to Baghmara via Nangalbibra.
Further many areas around Karukol were also submerged during the day due to the surge in the water level of the Simsang River. Water almost reached the top of the Simsang Bridge in Baghmara, making for a very scary site.
