SHILLONG, SEP 4: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that the second phase of border talks between Meghalaya and Assam is expected to resume next month.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sangma revealed that the decision to continue the discussions was made following a casual dinner meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about three weeks ago.
“We have both decided that at the earliest we expect that maybe in the month of October we should be able to have the next round of meeting,” Sangma stated.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that the second phase of the talks would be more complex than the first. “Therefore, we are being sensitive and careful as we move forward in locations like Langpih, Psiar, Khanduli, Block I, and II. We understand that these areas have lots of complications. It is not as simple as the first one.”
Sangma emphasized the need for caution and careful handling of the discussions, saying, “Though our desire and intention are as firm as before, because of the sensitivity of the situation and locations, we really want to be careful as we move forward so that we are able to resolve it in a proper way and in a way in which we are able to create the right consensus also.”
