30 locations identified for last mile connectivity

Meghalaya Government has identified as many as 30 locations in the state to ensure last-mile connectivity.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday held a review meeting with the Information and Communication Department to discuss matters related to last-mile connectivity in the State..

The initiative is spearheaded by the IT & C Department that marks a pivotal step in the state’s ambitious ‘Last Mile Connectivity’ project, ensuring that every citizen can benefit from the advantages of a digital connectivity.

The Chief Minister was also briefed about the ongoing upgradation of the State Wide Area Network (MSWAN), which provides services related to a secured intranet for e-Gov processing.

In his social Media page, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “Held review meeting with the Information and Communication Department to discuss matters related to last-mile connectivity in the State. In the first phase, 30 locations have been identified to ensure last-mile connectivity.”

The idea is to interconnect all district headquarters, sub-division headquarters, and block headquarters across the state.

The current demand for internet bandwidth is 39,130 TB/month at 15.5 Gbps, while the projected demand for the next five years is 4-5 lakh TB/month at 200 Gbps and the department is working to achieve the demand.

Despite challenges, the commitment of the Government stands to foster connectivity amidst the increasing demand.

The meeting also deliberated upon various clauses and modalities formulated for the establishment of Meghalaya Tech Parks Society and other IT and IT-enabled services, while the work of the Tura Tech Park is expected to be completed by March 2026 as the work order has already been awarded.
