Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor on Tuesday in formed that a total of 379 candidates have filed nominations for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Meghalaya scheduled to be held on February 27.
While 342 are male candidates who filed their nominations for the election to the 60-member assembly in the state, only 37 are women.
Kharkongor further informed that as many as 209 male candidates filed their nominations for the 36 seats in the Khasi- Jaintia Hills region.
133 male candidates filed their nominations for the 24 seats in Garo Hills region.
Similarly for the 36 seats in Khasi Jaintia Hills only 28 females have applied. While only 9 female candidates have filed nomination papers in Garo Hills region.
Tuesday happened to be the last day for filing nomination papers.
The maximum number of candidates filed nomination in East Khasi Hills, followed by West Garo Hills.
The date for scrutiny is Wednesday.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 10. Votes will be counted on March 2.
