The State government has begun evacuating Meghalaya students stranded in riot-hit Manipur. As many as 83 Meghalaya Students are evacuated so far as the state Government expects another around 165 students by next week. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Saturday held a review meeting with the officials to discuss the updates of these returnees.
Informing this, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “May be in Manipur one of the larger community is Meghalaya community so we have got large number of students more than compare to other states in the Northeast, so the process is taking abit more time.”
He also informed that close to hundred have already returned and assured that in the next 72 hours more students will be reaching the state.
The State Government booked the flights for the students and with coordination between officials of Government of Meghalaya & the Indian Army, the students have been and will be escorted from their place of stay to the Imphal Airport.
There are no exact figures but close to 250 people, mostly students, from Meghalaya are stranded there.
On Sunday around 50 students as well as citizens will be returning. The number will go upto 70 on Monday. On Tuesday 30 students/citizens will return and 15 students/citizens will return on Wednesday, “A statement from the Chief Minister office said.
The statement further added that Special flights from Imphal to Shillong are being arranged by the Government of Meghalaya to bring our students back at the earliest.
“2 officers have been deputed by the Government of Meghalaya to travel and stay in Imphal to oversee the transfer of students/citizens from the state and arrange for local support for safe travels for the students,” it said.
The Transport Department is arranging vehicles for students/citizens arriving at Guwahati Airport and the Government of Meghalaya is also arranging food on arrival daily at the airport.
The Government is in touch with the students in Manipur to monitor the situation and provide them with every assistance for their safe return.
