Amidst the growing demand for the appointment of IPS officer I. Nongrang as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong said the state Government has sent a proposal to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the appointment of the new DGP and is awaiting the approval from ECI.
Talking to Mediapersons, Tynsong said as many as five names were recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), however, two officers from Assam have turned down the offer and the proposal of three names was sent to ECI.
“Government has already taken a decision and is awaiting the ECI’s decision,” Tynsong said.
“Two-three days back we had already sent the proposal to the ECI and we are awaiting the clearance of the ECI and if we receive it today or tomorrow, we will make the appointment,” he added.
Asked, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “In fact five names were there but two of them one is present DGP of Assam the other one, who is also holding a very important post in Assam they already showed their disinterest as they don’t want to come to Meghalaya for the post of DGP. So we are left with three (officers) and one amongst them is I Nongrang.”
He further said the state Government will take a final call after studying all the factors.
Tynsong has asked the political parties to leave it to the wisdom of the government and not to have doubts as the government will appoint the right person to this point.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have demanded the government to appoint I Nongrang as new DGP of Meghalaya.
On this, Tynsong said, “For now I will tell you at the right time but let me tell you one thing, leave it to the wisdom of the government, don’t have doubts, we will appoint the right person to this important post.”
“You know political parties are political parties but let me just tell you one thing whoever says or whoever does not says leave it to the wisdom of the government because as far as appointment and transfer of the senior officers, be it chief secretary or DGP, we have to study nicely, we have to see from all angles and thereafter we take a final call,” he said.
