Meghalaya Government is coming up with an online portal to maintain a database of the students studying outside the state and the country.
Informing this, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the proposal will be brought before the next cabinet as during an emergency the state faces problems because of the lack of direct contacts with the students studying outside.
“A proposal where we have realised that we’ve seen this in the past also we have faced a lot of problems in the past also because of the fact that we did not have direct contact with our students so we are proposing in the next cabinet it is coming up,” Sangma said.
Realising the need to have a dedicated portals for the students studying outside after the Ukraine war and violence in Bangladesh, the Chief Minister said, “So by next cabinet we’ll be clearing this proposal where there will be online Portals where we are urging every student from Meghalaya who’s studying outside to please register and please give us your contact number so that you are in our database and immediately, if there’s any situation in a matter of just seconds will be able to bring out all the details of our students who are there and the contact numbers so that in the future if such situations happens in any part of the world, we have the necessary details and contacts.”
“So we’re coming up with a portal and that should help us a lot in the future but as of now, as I said, we have relying only on the information being given to us by the high commission and by the colleges that are there and also by the citizen and the parents whose children are children are studying in Bangladesh,” he added.
Asked if the online portal will only be for the students, Sangma said, it will be for everybody, though not mandatory.
“We would prefer that everybody should inform us, but it’s not going to be mandatory, but it’s something that we’re giving an option that will help us to have the database as and when situations arise,” the CM said.
It may be mentioned that in the last two days, the Government of Meghalaya has successfully facilitated the evacuation of 405 students from India, including 80 from Meghalaya and 131 from other states. Additionally, 249 students from Nepal, 8 from Bhutan, and 4 tourists have also been evacuated.
