Governor inaugurates up-graded library of KHADC

​SHILLONG, JULY 23: Governor of Meghalaya Phagu Chauhan today inaugurated the up-graded library of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

 

In the last 73 years the council never had a library and the need was felt to preserve all the information related to Traditional​governance, land, social customs, rich culture tradition and custom practises. Talking to Media Governor Chauhan expressed his happiness.

 

The up-graded library was inaugurated in the presence of all members and employees of the KHADC.

Speaking to media persons, chief executive member (CEM) KHADC Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that since the inception of the autonomous district council in Meghalaya in 1952, the library of the council was not up to date.

Syiem informed that inside the up-graded library various books, documents and other information are stored ranging on the traditions, governance, social custom, information about Chiefs, Raid, villages, land tenure system in the Khasi Hills and records on acts, rules and regulations, proceedings.

The CEM said the library has documents related to the first proceeding since the United Khasi Jaintia District Council, the first processing of the first house which are preserved, and now research scholars can come here and pay a visit and do research work with all this information that is there in the Library.

The oldest book in the library is from 1855 as there are different varieties of books, especially which deals only with the custom tradition and practises.

 

“The oldest record about the proceedings of the KHADC, dated back to 1952 and such records will be stored in the library” said Syiem.

He added that apart from storing various vital information, the library will also house books written by members of the KHADC and others, for example, senior leader BM Lanong had donated two books which he had written.

“The KHADC is working closely with the librarian of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to identify the kind of books to be stored at the newly inaugurated library” he added.

Meanwhile the CEM informed that soon the district council will release the publication of 40 publishers who are conducting research in various subjects.
