The Education Minister of Meghalaya, Rakkam A Sangma, has highlighted a significant issue in the state’s government higher secondary schools, where about 50-60 percent of the principal and vice principal positions have been vacant for the past 2-3 years.
“In many Government higher secondary schools, the posts of Principal and the Vice Principal have been lying vacant for the last 2-3 years because of certain issues that the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) could not hold and we are processing it right now,” Sangma said.
This situation has arisen due to delays by the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC). To address this, the government plans to first appoint vice principals and then to temporarily assign them to act as principals within the next couple of weeks until full-fledged principals can be appointed following DPC promotions.
Asked what measure the Government is taking to address the matter, the Education Minister said, “Initially we are sending the vice principals immediately within a week or two who will act as a principal incharge because to have full-fledged principals we need a little bit more time. We are definitely sending vice principals in the Government higher secondary schools till the time we appoint full-fledged principals with the DPC completed.”
“The posts (Principal and Vice Principal) in about 50-60 percent of the Government Higher secondary schools are vacant right now. The DPC is on and we will give them promotion and with promotion completed we will appoint to fulfill the vacancies,” the Minister said.
Additionally, the state is set to fill 132 vacant assistant professor positions, including those at Patharkhmah and Rongjeng Degree Colleges, through an imminent recruitment drive.
Asserting that the state Government is planning to start classes for the Patharkhmah and Rongjeng soon, he said,”In the higher secondary for the post of Assistant professor mostly in the Government institution there in the colleges over 132 posts are vacant including Patharkhmah and Rongjeng Degree College, we are going for the advertisement this week only and we will recruit all the 132 plus assistant professors immediately in the next one month.”
