The KSU Sawsymper Circle, KSU Balat Border Area Circle and KSU Lawbah Border Area Circle has decided to stage a sit-in demonstration in Mawsynram on August 10, as a mark of protest against the government’s adamant attitude towards the demand for the up-gradation of Mawsynram CRD Block to Civil Sub-Division.
Speaking to media persons, General Secretary of KSU South West Khasi Hills, Jiedskhem Nongsiej said that this demand is not only the demand of pressure groups but it is the demand of all the residents of Mawsynram area which they have been demanding since 2018.
Nongsiej said that Mawsynram CRD Block is one of the oldest blocks in Meghalaya.
“The Mawsynram CRD Block has an area of not less than 5000 sqkm, with more than 162 villages and more than 44,000 inhabitants,” said Nongsiej.
Nongsiej said that the demand for the up-gradation of Mawsynram CRD Block to Civil Sub-Division is very necessary as Mawsynram is very far for the residents to go to Shillong.
“Mawsynram is more than 60 km away from Shillong, and there are also villages in the border areas which are more than 90 km away and this makes it difficult for the people to come all the way to Shillong” he added.
The KSU South West Khasi Hills leader said that the union has already written to the chief minister to schedule a meeting but till date the union has not not received any reply.
“The protest by the protesters in Mawsynram on 10th July will be only the beginning and from now on the party will continue to push the Government to upgrade Mawsynram CRD Block to Civil Sub-Division.
