Meghalaya Govt launches digital portal Ryndia.in and Textile Directory on National Handloom Day

The Khasi weaving and embroideries, particularly the intricately designed tassels of the jaiñsem, are gaining recognition, largely unknown to many. The ryndia, a traditional fabric, has been a source of inspiration for young designers in Meghalaya.

To promote this rich heritage, the Meghalaya Government launched a digital portal Ryndia.in, and the Textile Directory on National Handloom Day 2024. Textile Minister Paul Lyngdoh in Shillong launched it at U Soso Tham auditorium, Shillong.

Addressing the gathering, Lyngdoh emphasized the need for collective effort to harness the talent of the state’s weavers and encouraged third-generation weavers to uphold their ancestral traditions.

The Minister noted the global appreciation of Meghalaya’s handloom products and encouraged weavers to innovate for international competition.

“Today we are proud to show to the rest of the world that our fabrics and products are available at Ri Bhoi District and other parts of the state.  The potential that our state has, we would like to maximize our textile, not just in the rest of India but internationally,” Lyngdoh said.

Additionally, he announced the upcoming inauguration of a textile center at Umden, Nongpoh, expected to be a major tourist attraction.

Also present on the occasion was Dr. Anna Louise Meynell, an international textiles expert from Scotland.

She shared her journey with ryndia since 2014, detailing her deep connection with the artisans and understanding of the production process.

Dr. Meynell highlighted the unique selling point of ryndia, emphasizing the involvement of artisans and the deep connection of the silk to the people of Meghalaya.

The event featured the launch of the Meghalaya Textile Directory cum Textiles Atlas and the department’s e-portal, as well as fashion shows by students of KL Bajoria College and designer Daniel Syiem, which were the program’s highlights. Commissioner  & Secretary, Arts & Culture Shri. FR Kharkongor, Padmashree Smt. Patricia Mukhim and government officials were also present on the occasion.
