Govt Pushes for Alternative Road to Revive ISBT Operations

Shillong, Sep 10: Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Transport, Sniawbhalang Dhar, announced on Tuesday that the state government has urged the Public Works Department (PWD) to expedite construction of an alternative road to facilitate the use of the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong by large buses.

“We are requesting the PWD to complete the alternative road as soon as possible. Hopefully, once this road is completed, big buses will be able to return and resume operations at the ISBT,” Dhar said while speaking to reporters.

The Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted the adverse impact of the Umiam bridge closure on bus operators and shop owners at the ISBT. The bridge closure has restricted access for larger vehicles, causing disruptions in transport services and business activities.

Dhar expressed optimism that the alternative road, which will run along the Mawlai bypass toward the airport road, will be completed within a year. “We expect normal business to resume accordingly once the road is ready,” he added.
