Police Register Two Extortion Cases in Shillong

 

The East Khasi Hills District Police have registered two cases of extortion targeting businessmen in Shillong, suspected to be the work of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). Police sources confirmed that a suo-moto case was registered at Sadar Thana on September 17 after a WhatsApp message demanding money, claiming to be from the HNLC, was sent to a businessman. In a separate case, Police have filed a case pertaining to a similar incident has also been registered at Laban PS recently.

“The matter is currently under investigation,” police sources stated, adding that no arrests have been made so far.

Further, the East Khasi Hills District Police have ramped up security measures across Shillong. “We have increased vehicle checks at various Nakas to instill confidence among the public and as a preventive measure,” said a police sources.

With extortion demands on the rise, particularly targeting  business owners, authorities are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of the city’s residents. “The police are doing everything possible to prevent any untoward incidents,” the sources added.
