Garo Hills, Oct 7: Relief operations in Meghalaya are focused on the hardest-hit areas of Chokpot and Dalu, where a total of 69 villages have been severely impacted, and 17,032 individuals are currently being housed in relief camps. The situation remains critical as authorities work to provide essential support to the displaced communities.
As of October 7, 2024, the status of relief camps across the Garo Hills reveals varied levels of activity. In South West Garo Hills, particularly in Ampati, no relief camps have been established, and there are no reports of affected individuals, though staff from the Silkigre PHC in Silkigre village have been deployed. In South Garo Hills, the situation in Baghmara’s Chokpot area has prompted the activation of one relief camp to shelter those impacted.
The most severely affected area is West Garo Hills, specifically in the Dalu region of Tura, where 68 villages have been devastated. A total of 32 relief camps have been set up, accommodating around 17,000 people displaced by severe flooding and landslides.
In contrast, North Garo Hills (Resubelpara) and East Garo Hills (Williamnagar) report no active relief camps, and no individuals have been affected in these districts. The situation continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts from local authorities to manage the crisis and support those in need.
