Key Candidates File Nominations for Gambegre Bye-Election, Setting the Stage for a High-Stakes Political Battle

Prominent candidates from the NPP, BJP, and Congress have officially filed their nominations on Thursday for the Gambegre Assembly bye-election, slated for November 13, with vote counting on November 23.

Dr. Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, submitted her nomination on Thursday, accompanied by her husband, Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K. Sangma.

Her candidacy represents a significant effort by the NPP to retain the seat, with a campaign expected to focus on the party’s development agenda for the state.

Bernard N. Marak, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, also filed his nomination. His bid signals the BJP’s intention to expand its influence in Meghalaya, with a campaign centered on governance reforms and infrastructure development, posing a challenge to the NPP’s dominance.

This seat was previously held by Saleng Sangma, a Congress leader, who vacated it after winning the Tura MP election.

The Congress is fielding newcomer Jingjang M. Marak, who was the first to submit his nomination earlier in the day. His candidacy further intensifies the competition in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes political contest.
