The situation at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has grown increasingly tense as students escalate their protests against the administration, calling for the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, Registrar Omkar Singh, and Deputy Registrar Amit Gupta. As students continues with their indefinite hunger strikes, the students also locked University gates and this still continues, Earlier students also burnt effigy of Vice Chancellor and other two officials. Accusations of administrative mismanagement and power misuse have fueled student demands, with protestors alleging a lack of transparency and leadership failures in the university.
Tensions intensified on Saturday night when protestors vandalized Prof. Shukla’s official residence, resulting in damage to his vehicle and minor injuries to the Vice Chancellor himself. In response, Prof. Shukla relocated to an undisclosed location for safety. An FIR has been filed by the university’s registrar-in-charge, targeting unknown individuals responsible for the attack.
The NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), with support from the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit, is at the forefront of the protests, demanding the appointment of Pro Vice Chancellors for both the Shillong and Tura campuses. Faculty groups, including the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA), have expressed solidarity with the students, condemning the administration for alleged abuses of power and calling for leadership changes to restore trust within the university community.
