SHILLONG, NOV 19: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday voiced his concern over the deteriorating health of the agitating students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who have been on hunger strike for over 15 days.
Sangma urged the students to reconsider their protest, pointing out that the Centre had already initiated an inquiry into the ongoing issues at the university.
“I request my dear students, if they could call off their agitation and wait for the recommendation or outcome of (the inquiry) because both their health is important, academics is also important…we cannot compromise at any cost,” Sangma said.
The minister also confirmed that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had already raised the matter with the Centre for further intervention, and that the committee formed by the government of India would soon present its recommendations.
Sangma assured that he would personally visit the agitating students soon.
