Dr. Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, emerged victorious in the Gambegre by-election. She defeated her closest competitor, Sadiarani M. Sangma of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), by a margin of 4,594 votes.
The NPP secured 12,678 votes, while the TMC managed 8,084 votes. Congress, once dominant in the region, failed to reclaim its bastion, with its candidate Jingjang M. Marak receiving 7,695 votes. BJP’s Bernard N. Marak, on the other hand, could not cross the 1,000-vote mark.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who actively campaigned for his wife even before the by-election was officially announced, has achieved a significant political win with this result.
