In the face of growing speculation about his political allegiance, Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC) President Charles Pyngrope has clarified that leaving the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) would lead to his disqualification as an MLA under the anti defection law.
Pyngrope, who is the lone TMC legislator from the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, stated that any decision on his political course would only be made after consulting his supporters and at the end of the current Assembly term.
The rumors intensified after the dissolution of the Nongthymmai block TMC, which saw several leaders and supporters merge with the Congress. This has sparked widespread speculation about a possible alignment of the state TMC leadership with the Congress.
Adding fuel to the fire, opposition chief whip and Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh, hinted at a possible shift, stating, “I think that should be a very clear message to the people of the state. The president of the Meghalaya Trinamool Congress, the President himself, has dissolved the entire block there (Nongthymmai) TMC block and asked his supporters to join the Congress. That says a very loud and clear message… It is only the Congress that can serve the people of Meghalaya.”
As Meghalaya’s political dynamics evolve, Pyngrope’s next move remains a key factor in shaping the state’s political landscape.
