Amid ongoing speculation, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala has claimed that he remains in touch with his former colleague, Dr. Mukul Sangma, and continues to encourage leaders who left Congress to return. However, Pala emphasized that the decision does not rest with him but rather with the party’s central leadership. In response to the growing speculation, Dr. Sangma urged patience, asking the public not to jump to conclusions and to wait for a few more days regarding the ongoing narrative.
Pala acknowledged Dr. Sangma’s experience and stature, stating that any decision about his return to Congress must be dealt with and approved by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
“Congress never closes its doors for anyone. It depends on him. He knows better than me—among the AICC, among the leaders—he knows better than me. I always respect Dr. Mukul. Even now and then, I used to call them also, I said, ‘You come back to us.’ But it doesn’t depend on me. A man like Dr. Mukul, with his experience and his position, has to be accepted by the AICC, not by us. I have no problem; we will welcome him,” Pala said.
However, Dr. Sangma dismissed the speculation, taking to his social media page to address the matter. He wrote, “While I have been recuperating from brief illness, I have not been able to meet, nor speak to, all my good friends from the media fraternity for quite some time – but, as one of the news headlines in a media channel is in circulation today, speculative political narratives do get generated by the vibrant media due to the ever evolving political dynamics. Though I sincerely appreciate the members of the “fourth estate “ for being active and vigilant besides the hard work (working overtime) to ensure news dissemination for all of us, my sincere request to all is to wait for few more days in as far as this narrative is concerned – it will be nice and appropriate to hear from the horses mouth
Enjoy your weekend and stay blessed everyone”
Pala also addressed the departure of Dr. Sangma from Congress, saying, “Dr. Mukul left the Congress; the Congress did not throw him out or expel him. He was the Chief Minister; he was a senior member. He left because of reasons best known to him. I admit that when somebody leaves us there will definitely be a vacuum but it takes a minimum two years to fill up. As on today in Garo Hills we have already started doing it. It was a bye elections thats why we lost otherwise had it been a normal election, we would have managed it and same thing you will see, I can prove in the coming MDC elections, congress will do better that any other parties.”
With the INDIA alliance in Meghalaya not yielding results, Pala made it clear that decisions regarding alliances would be made at the central level, not by the state leadership.
Looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Pala stressed that Congress would avoid forming alliances to maintain its identity and strength. “Congress has started the process for 2028. We don’t want to ally with any political party. Whenever Congress enters an alliance—be it in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, or elsewhere—it shrinks. I don’t want that trap. People in Meghalaya like Congress,” he concluded.
