Charles Pyngrope: The “Last Samurai” in Meghalaya TMC in Khasi-Jaintia Hills

With the dissolution of the Nongtymmai Block TMC Committee and the exodus of many of his supporters to the Congress, Meghalaya TMC President Charles Pyngrope finds himself standing alone in the political arena. Reflecting on his position, Pyngrope remarked, “At the moment, I am alone, Last Samurai Standing.”

He characterized himself as a “one-man army” while emphasizing his independence and enduring relationships across party lines.

Speaking about his ties with Congress leader Vincent H. Pala, Pyngrope said, “I have been in touch with Pala since he became president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee. I never lost touch; we are still very good friends.”

When asked about potential collaboration with Pala, he clarified, “I am ready to work with anybody. Who am I? I am just a member. If I go in, I will go as a member—but a registered member. But please don’t write that he has joined.”

Addressing rumors of overtures from other political parties, Pyngrope stated, “No, I haven’t been contacted officially by anybody, whether it is Congress, NPP, VPP, or BJP. No one has contacted me officially.”

On his relationship with the AICC leadership in Kolkata, he shared, “Whenever I go to Kolkata, I talk to them regarding matters; doors are always open for me.”

Regarding his rapport with TMC Parliamentary Party leader and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma, Pyngrope deflected speculation about alignment with a potential new party, saying, “Ask me the question if I will make my own political party.”
