Shillong,Dec 3: Nongthymmai legislator and Meghalaya TMC President Charles Pyngrope has called for the creation of dedicated infrastructure in every district to rehabilitate drug users and addicts. While acknowledging the proactive steps taken by the state government in addressing the drug menace, Pyngrope emphasized the need to accelerate efforts in line with the growing severity of the issue.
“We need to create infrastructure in every district that can accommodate the drug users and addicts to rehabilitate. We can’t depend just on private enterprises alone. This is a subject that has to be taken seriously by the department or the government as a whole,” Pyngrope stated.
Highlighting the significant role played by NGOs, he noted, “There are NGOs which are very genuine and are working tirelessly, often using their own resources without government aid. However, the department can always tie up with the NGOs but keep a tab on what they are doing and record everything. You can’t just give funds, close your eyes, and expect the funds to be used judiciously.”
Pyngrope also expressed confidence in the integrity of various organizations across Shillong and the state, which continue their work without financial assistance. “There is no doubt that there are organisations in Shillong and across the state that are working with probity, without getting any money,” he said.
Stressing the urgency of the situation, he added, “The state government has to come forward and act at a fast speed. The government has taken proactive steps in its fight against the drug menace, but these efforts need to be accelerated, considering the pace at which the problem is growing.”
