Ampareen on Congress Exodus: “Party Failed to Address Our Needs Democratically”

Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh, a key leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Cabinet Minister in the Meghalaya government, has reiterated her steadfast commitment to the party. Dispelling rumors of a possible return to the Congress, she expressed satisfaction with her current political alignment. Reflecting on her departure from the Congress, Lyngdoh remarked that she had foreseen its members leaving due to the party’s failure to address their needs, requirements, and suggestions in a democratic manner.

“I had predicted that one day everyone will leave from one party (Congress) because they did not attend to our needs, requirements, or suggestions in a democratic manner,” Dr. Lyngdoh stated. “I will attend to any extraordinary circumstances as and when they arise, but you must admit that I saw the writing on the wall.”

Dismissing any speculation about her involvement with the Congress, she added, “I will not indulge in anything that matters to the Indian National Congress. I am NPP written on my forehead. It would be incorrect, and I will not indulge. I am now very happy and appreciate everything that is happening in the MDA [Meghalaya Democratic Alliance]. I see no reason to entertain any other discussion. Whether or not it needs or does not need anything is for them to decide. That is no longer the fold I belong to, unfortunately.”

Addressing rumors about political shifts, Dr. Lyngdoh said, “I have no idea, no clue, nor do I have an interest. It doesn’t really matter who’s in any list or not in any list. During my tenure, I have served to the best of my ability in various capacities across all political parties I’ve been with. My father also went through many changes in his life because of the requirements of the time. We have always been dedicated to whichever political party we’ve associated ourselves with. If somebody is trying to woo us, we are unaware and have no interest.”

Reflecting on her current term, she emphasized her focus on governance: “I’m one and a half years into my next term. Why are people interested in having an election again? Why don’t you allow us to first do our work? I don’t think I’m interested in having any such conversation with anyone. Right now, I’m with the NPP, and I will give the NPP the best of my capabilities. I will not distract myself with any distraction of this nature. I will serve the people of the state and my constituency.”

Dr. Lyngdoh expressed her appreciation for all the parties she has worked with, saying, “They all had their own focuses. I believe that we need to ensure we know what we are doing. By the looks of it, I think I was correct in some of the major political decisions I had to make. I wish we would not see this exodus repeatedly, but India is vibrant and dynamic. Nations across the globe envy Indian democracy for this. Its dynamic nature is the pattern of life in India, only to be researched and documented by scholars who will ensure that India’s political journey is studied for a better forward path.”
