Meghalaya BJP MLA to Write to Assam CM, Centre Over Beef Ban in Assam

BJP MLA from South Shillong Constituency, Sanbor Shullai, firmly stated that there will be no beef ban in Meghalaya as long as he is alive. Expressing his opposition to any such restrictions in Assam, Shullai informed that he would write to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to express his discontent. “We feel bad, we feel so sorry. He shouldn’t do all these things. We have the law to restrict criminals, but when it comes to what we eat, it’s a personal choice,” he said.

Shullai emphasized that no one should be forced to adhere to another’s dietary preferences. “It’s not nice. It should not happen, and I will stand against it. As long as Bah Sanbor Shullai is alive, I will not allow a beef ban here. Meghalaya is an independent state, and we can eat whatever we want. Christmas is coming, and we will enjoy eating everything. The New Year is coming, and we’ll eat everything,” he asserted.

Explaining the difference in governance style, Shullai noted, “I am here today as BJP Sanbor, so my style of functioning is different. In Assam, the style is different. Here it is BJP Sanbor.” He confirmed that he has already prepared a letter to send to the central government, with a copy to Assam’s Chief Minister, condemning the proposal. “We have the law to restrict criminals, but in terms of what we eat, it’s not something we should restrict,” he added.

Shullai continued by pointing out that there is no law in India’s constitution that bans any type of meat. “When we travel all over the world, you’ll see in places like Bangkok, Indonesia, Malaysia, and European countries, they even eat snake, rats, insects, and scorpions. There’s no restriction. They eat it, so why should Assam restrict eating beef? I oppose that here in Meghalaya. It’s your choice what to eat. You can eat snake; I’ve eaten dog meat. Just two months ago, my friend sent me a piece of dog meat, and I ate it with my wife. So, what’s the big deal?”
