Shillong: The Meghalaya government has taken serious note of recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) intrusions from Bangladesh near the border districts of Sohra and Shella. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also heads the Home and Police departments, confirmed that the state government has officially communicated these security concerns to the central government.
The incidents, which have emerged in the wake of political instability in Bangladesh, have significantly heightened security apprehensions along Meghalaya’s 443-kilometer-long border with the neighboring country.
Speaking to the media, Tynsong emphasized the collaborative efforts between the state and central governments to address the issue.
“I think this issue is not only the responsibility of the state government alone, but we have already informed the Government of India, and they are taking this very seriously. Similarly, the state government is doing its part. I have already instructed our Director General of Police (DG) and Chief Secretary to take necessary steps, whether through meetings or formal communication. There are issues I cannot narrate, as the matter is sensitive, so please understand that I cannot share everything,” the Deputy Chief Minister stated.
While acknowledging the sensitivity of the matter, Tynsong assured the public that the government is working diligently to prevent such incidents
“From the state government’s side, it is our responsibility to ensure that these kinds of activities do not happen again. It is equally the duty of the central government to take this up with the government of Bangladesh. We are addressing it on a regular basis, and review meetings are being held. However, due to the sensitive nature of the matter, we cannot publicly disclose details of these meetings,” Tynsong added.
Tynsong emphasized that both the state and central governments are working in close coordination to address the issue. “Necessary action will be taken accordingly. The state government and the central government are sitting together very closely on this matter. Please don’t worry; I believe everything will be fine,” he assured.
