Shillong, January 12: Two tourists from Assam sustained minor injuries in a road accident at Mawkdok while returning from Sohra (Cherrapunjee) on Sunday. Their vehicle veered off the road along the winding and often challenging terrain of the area.
In a fortunate turn of events, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who were en route from Sohra, stopped at the accident site. Demonstrating prompt leadership, the Chief Minister’s medical team, led by a doctor attached to his office, attended to the injured individuals. An ambulance was called to transport the victims to a nearby hospital for further care.
Eyewitnesses lauded the swift response by the state leaders. “It’s good to see Meghalaya Chief Minister himself come forward to help tourists,” remarked Jitumoni Saikia, a resident of Guwahati.
Another witness, Mamoni Saikia, added, “Accidents are common these days, but it’s rare to see a Chief Minister stepping out of his vehicle to assist personally.”
The tourists are reported to be stable and recovering well. Authorities have reiterated the need for caution while driving along Meghalaya’s scenic but often treacherous hilly roads, particularly during the tourist season.
