UDP Announces Third List of Candidates for District Council Elections

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has released its third list of candidates for the upcoming District Council elections scheduled for February 21.

For the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the party announced Lee Trevor S. Bareh for Jirang Constituency, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah (sitting MLA) for Sohïong Constituency, and Anthony Khongwang for Nongshken Constituency. For the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Meiowan Pasi will contest from Nongbah Mihmyntdu.

Speaking to media persons, UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh expressed confidence in the party’s candidates and hinted at a strong performance. “Let me assure you, this time it is very, very strange that we are fortunate to have very competent candidates. They are very promising, and this time we are going to give a big surprise to everyone,” Lyngdoh said.

When asked if the UDP expects to lead in both councils, he responded, “That is what we are working out right now. That’s why the screening of candidates is taking a little time. However, we have made it very clear that the candidates this time are not just to fill up seats.”

Lyngdoh also shared updates on the party’s preparations: “Hopefully, in a day or two, the final list will be out. We have already finalized the manifesto for the District Council polls, and it will be released very soon. We are fielding 22 candidates in KHADC and 17 in JHADC, and the fourth list will be announced shortly.”

When questioned about whether the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) contesting separately would impact UDP’s prospects, the UDP President dismissed concerns. “I don’t think so because we have taken this decision jointly with HSPDP. During the meeting held under the RDA, we decided to field our own candidates.”

Lyngdoh also addressed concerns about the party’s position in the coalition, referencing the last Assembly elections: “In the 2023 MLA elections, we were part of MDA-1 and secured 12 seats. So, the question of having less chance in the government does not arise.”
