The Meghalaya government is set to integrate robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and emerging technologies into the school curriculum as part of an ongoing revision of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and the State Curriculum Framework (SCF). Chief Secretary DP Wahlang confirmed that alongside these updates, students will gain exposure to AI, robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and new language learning programs.
Talking to Mediapersons, the Chief Secretary said, “Yes, definitely. The school curriculum is being revised. Along with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), the State Curriculum Framework (SCF) is also undergoing revision. With these updates, new fields such as robotics, AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and new language learning will be introduced. All these will be part of the curriculum, and I am sure students will benefit.”
Emphasizing the need for a modern and dynamic education system, Wahlang added, “We are in touch with NCERT, and we will incorporate whatever NCERT includes in the curriculum. But we will also add more to make it more dynamic.”
Highlighting the importance of hands-on learning, Wahlang revealed that the state is taking concrete steps to expand STEM education. “Today, I mentioned in the state executive committee – the project appraisal board meeting of the SSA – that the STEM lab should be expanded to at least 100 schools so that more students benefit. It’s not just about learning new things; the most important aspect is critical thinking. What you learn in textbooks is different from what you see and experience with your own hands. When students touch and interact with projects, it creates a totally different feeling altogether. It builds their interest and nurtures the scientific temperament that is essential.”
