Ed Sheeran Set to Perform in Shillong as Authorities Restrict Entry for Children Below Five

British pop icon Ed Sheeran is set to perform in Shillong on February 12, 2025, as part of his Mathematics Tour, with JN Stadium expected to host a crowd of 26,000 fans, including visitors from outside Meghalaya. Authorities have enforced strict regulations, barring children below five years from attending the event.

Deputy Commissioner Rosetta Mary Kurbah confirmed the restriction, stating, “Children below 5 years old will not be allowed entry, even if accompanied by a ticket-holding parent.”

The concert, organized by BookMyShow, follows Shillong’s growing reputation as a hub for international music events, including last year’s Bryan Adams concert. The BookMyShow team has already arrived in the city to oversee preparations, aiming to replicate the energy of Coldplay’s India performances.

At a press briefing, DC Kurbah, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem, and event manager Nikita outlined security measures, crowd control strategies, and logistical plans for the highly anticipated concert. With only two designated entry points, authorities are urging attendees to arrive early to avoid congestion.

“Today’s meeting is regarding the preparation for the Ed Sheeran concert, which is happening the day after tomorrow. For the kind information of all ticket holders, the gates will open at 4 PM. However, we are a little concerned because there are only two entry points. Therefore, we have called this meeting to alert attendees to arrive early to avoid congestion,” said DC Kurbah.

She further emphasized, “The total number of gates is two—one at the main gate and another from Golf Link. Additionally, the road leading from Golf Link to JN Stadium will be closed at 3 PM. Similar to previous concerts like Bryan Adams, traffic arrangements will be in place from 3 PM.”

Addressing concerns over limited access points, Kurbah explained, “There is ongoing work by Urban Affairs along Wahumkhrah, so the first gate near the ground is closed. However, alternate arrangements have been made.”

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem assured that traffic and security measures are in place, stating, “Public entry will be through the SRT parking lot, which will remain vehicle-free, except for the event crew. Once attendees reach the gate, they will be divided into groups—General Admission (GA) and GA Plus. GA Plus ticket holders will be directed to the front of the stadium, while GA attendees will access the area via a different route.”

Event Manager Nikita provided details on the entry process, saying, “The lineup will begin at 3 PM, allowing people to enter the SRT parking area. However, access to the stadium premises will only begin at 4 PM. The checking process includes three layers: the first soft check for wristbands, the hard check at security gates with frisking and metal detectors, and a final soft check before entry into the stadium.”

When asked about potential crowding issues due to the late opening of gates, Nikita responded, “We have divided entry across three gates to ensure an even distribution. GA ticket holders will enter via Gate B and walk around the stadium, while GA Plus attendees will take a separate route. This staggered ingress plan is designed to prevent overcrowding.”

With Shillong’s schools scheduled to reopen on the same day, concerns were raised about potential disruptions. DC Kurbah clarified, “There are no plans to close schools, as some are conducting exams. However, we want to create awareness and urge the public to make necessary arrangements to avoid children getting stranded.”

Regarding parking for attendees arriving from outside the state, an event management representative stated, “Special parking has been arranged for lounge ticket holders at HSBC Lounge and DEXA Lounge, with entry through Gate 1. Other attendees must use designated general parking areas as per traffic regulations.”

Responding to concerns over excessive security checks, SP Syiem assured, “During past events like Bryan Adams’ concert, security checks were seamless, and we expect the same this time. Our officers have been sensitized to emergencies, and any private vehicle carrying an ill person will be granted passage.”

With an estimated 26,000 spectators, authorities are urging concertgoers to “cooperate with security measures, arrive early, and follow designated routes” to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience at one of Shillong’s most significant international music events.
