HIV Cases in Meghalaya Remain High, 80% Transmission Through Heterosexual Contact

The Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS) has reported that 80% of HIV cases in Meghalaya are transmitted through heterosexual contact. The state currently has nearly 10,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, with an HIV prevalence rate of 0.43%, which is significantly higher than the national average of 0.21%.

According to available data, 466 children in Meghalaya are living with HIV, of whom 374 are under treatment. Among adults, 4,587 are female and 4,477 are male. Despite years of awareness campaigns,  not many of Meghalaya’s population possesses comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS, as per the National Family Health Survey 2021. The persistent gap in awareness remains a major concern, highlighting the need for stronger interventions and education on HIV prevention.

The Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS) on Monday felicitated Daniel Wahlang, the second runner-up, and Skhemlang Suba, the third runner-up, of the National Red Run 2025, which saw participation from teams representing 32 states. The event took place in Goa on January 18, 2025.
