Elderly Man Fatally Hit by Assam Rifles Escort Vehicle in Nongpoh

 

A tragic accident claimed the life of a 93-year-old man after he was struck by an escort vehicle of the Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR) in Nongpoh on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 10:20 AM in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Ri Bhoi. According to Ri Bhoi police, the victim, identified as Jonga Bahadur of Shangbangla, was attempting to cross the road just after two convoy vehicles had passed when he was hit by the third vehicle, a Mahindra Thar (Registration No. ML 05 Y-3232) driven by Sreekanth S.S., son of Sreekumar G., from the DGAR Secretariat in Laitkor, East Khasi Hills.

Police confirmed that the vehicle was part of a convoy traveling from Shillong to Guwahati. Following the accident, the injured victim was immediately rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, where all necessary accident formalities were observed. Both the driver and the victim underwent medical examinations, and the involved vehicle was taken into police custody.

Despite being referred to NEIGRIHMS Hospital in Shillong for advanced treatment, the elderly man succumbed to his injuries. “As per information received from the victim’s son, his father has expired at NEIGRIHMS,” police reported. An inquest into the case is now underway.
