Marcuise Dismisses Claims of GNLA Regrouping, Highlights Govt’s Development Efforts

Shillong, February 13: Williamnagar MLA and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak has categorically denied claims of any attempt to regroup the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a militant outfit that once posed a serious security threat in Meghalaya. The GNLA was effectively dismantled following the death of its leader, Sohan D. Shira, in 2018. Shira, then Meghalaya’s most wanted terrorist, was killed by police commandos in an encounter at Achakpek near Dobu in East Garo Hills.

Refuting speculation of GNLA’s resurgence, Marak stated, “There’s no such news now, it was only some rumours about GNLA regrouping. There’s no such regrouping in practical terms. Nowadays, roads are accessible to every village. When there was GNLA and ANVC long ago, there was no road communication; crossing the Simsang River was difficult and had to be done by boat, which gave them an advantage. But now, with numerous bridges and roads, even the remotest villages are connected. Therefore, there is no chance of GNLA regrouping. Even villages are not supporting them now, and if anyone tries, the government will identify them.”

Shira’s death led to the surrender of several GNLA cadres, ushering in a period of relative peace in the Garo Hills. Recognizing Williamnagar’s past as a militancy hotbed, Marak, who is also the spokesperson of the MDA government, highlighted various initiatives taken to ensure stability and drive development in the region.

“Most of the youth are educated now, and from the government’s side, there are many programs like CM Elevate, MRLS, Focus, and Focus Plus. Along with district administration and block development officers, we have conducted several programs to sensitize youth and encourage them to apply for police recruitment. Many have participated and witnessed the transparency in the process, which has boosted their confidence. Even Home Guards recruitment is happening,” he said.

Marak further emphasized government efforts to guide the youth in employment opportunities. “Along with the district administration, we have conducted sensitization programs on appearing for District Selection Board exams. We are guiding our youth, and most of them are coming forward now. Through CM Elevate, many have availed facilities, some have registered for contract work, and I am trying my best to provide them with employment opportunities. Even at the ground level, offices are assisting them. I don’t think there are any youth now who are disgruntled or considering going back to militancy. Most are striving to build a better future.”
