Union Minister Highlights Meghalaya’s Role in Development, Addresses Concerns on Implementation Gaps

Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to Meghalaya’s development, stating that implementation of central schemes is being evaluated by bona fide agencies to ensure their effectiveness. He emphasized that any gaps in execution will be addressed through collaboration between the Centre and the state government.

“We always appreciate the hard work of every government, irrespective of ideology, party affiliation, or alliance. The implementation of programs is assessed by our bona fide agencies, and based on these evaluations, further grants are approved. As of now, all stakeholders are working efficiently, though there may be some practical loopholes. Ultimately, it is up to the people of Meghalaya to assess the situation. For the central government, Meghalaya remains an essential part of our growth engine, as envisioned by our Prime Minister,” Margherita said.

Responding to allegations raised by BJP Vice President and Tura MDC Bernard Marak on issues such as PMGSY, JJM, scholarships, and the Agreed Text of Settlement with Garo Hills-based rebel groups, the minister stated, “If there are any gaps, we assure you that by working hand in hand with the state government, we will resolve them. Our goal is to achieve the vision of Vikshit Bharat.”

State BJP President Rikman G Momin also assured that concerns raised would be discussed with the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) partners, stating, “We will ensure that nothing is left out, and we will look into all issues.”

The Union Minister highlighted the Union Budget 2025-26 as a significant boost for Meghalaya, particularly for SC/ST women entrepreneurs, stating, “Five lakh SC/ST women will receive loans of up to ₹2 crore over five years. The Northeast, and Meghalaya in particular, will benefit immensely from this scheme, as it aligns with our commitment to empowering Nari Shakti.”

Meghalaya is expected to gain from several budgetary allocations, including infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, health, and education. The PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana will target 100 districts with low agricultural productivity, benefiting Meghalaya’s farming sector. The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan limit has been raised from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh, providing crucial financial support to farmers.

The revamped UDAN scheme will improve air connectivity, giving a significant boost to Meghalaya’s tourism sector. Additionally, the government’s initiative to develop various tourist destinations nationwide, in collaboration with state governments, is expected to enhance Meghalaya’s position as a global tourism hub.

The budget also focuses on healthcare and education, with increased allocations for Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 to address malnutrition and stunting among children. Plans to establish 200 district-level daycare cancer centers over the next three years will strengthen Meghalaya’s healthcare infrastructure. Meanwhile, broadband connectivity for all government schools will enhance digital learning and student employability.

Entrepreneurs and MSMEs in Meghalaya will benefit from increased credit guarantee cover, doubling limits for micro and small enterprises. This aligns with Meghalaya’s Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy, supporting young entrepreneurs through initiatives like CM ELEVATE and PRIME.

Margherita underscored the Northeast’s special status in the central government’s planning, stating, “Unlike other states, the Northeast has a dedicated ministry with a separate budget under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). This ensures that each budget cycle includes special allocations and schemes for the region. The highest number of roads and tourism projects have been developed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, including the PM-DevINE scheme and the four-lane road project at New Shillong Township.”

The minister’s statements reaffirm the central government’s focus on Meghalaya’s development, while also addressing concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the implementation of various schemes and policies.
