In a significant move aimed at supporting the youth of Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, during his budget speech, unveiled the Chief Minister’s Scholarship Scheme, a flagship initiative designed to benefit 80,000 students in the state from the next financial year. The scheme will offer a grant of ₹6,000 annually to post-matriculate students to help cover their educational expenses.
Speaking to media persons, the Chief Minister elaborated on the rationale behind the scheme: “We felt that the students, because all the feedback I get, it seems students really need support. So, while we cannot give them full support in every way, at least some kind of support from the government side would be good in supporting them, promoting them, and pushing them to do higher studies. That is why we came up with this program, called the CM Scholarship Scheme, where we will be giving ₹6,000 on an annual basis to every post-matric student doing different courses under the post-matric category.”
The Chief Minister also revealed that ₹48 crore has been earmarked for the project, which will kick off in the upcoming financial year. “This is the new scheme, and it will start from this coming financial year,” he added.
The scheme is expected to provide much-needed financial relief to students and encourage them to pursue higher education, addressing the growing need for government support in the state.
