With the formation of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0 (MDA-2) Government in the state, the BJP leaders seem to be saying away from the ‘Most corrupt state’ remark of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Distancing themselves from the remark, State BJP President Earnest Mawrie said during the election the political parties had liberty to give any speech, to attack anybody but these are all election gimmicks.
“So this is an election speech, now the election is over, so there is nothing to say on that,” Mawrie said.
The state president said that the party is maintaining the same stand on zero tolerance against corruption despite being part of the MDA-2 government.
“We went to support the government as we want to have a stable government. We don’t want to see as a party that the people in our state will suffer,” he said. He added that it is too early to comment on the performance of the MDA-2 government.
Interestingly, National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rituraj Sinha refused to give any direct reply but said that as elections are over, it’s time to ensure the best possible, stable government in Meghalaya.
“I think elections are over, it is time for us to ensure the best possible stable Government for the state of Meghalaya. Meghalaya has a lot of developmental challenges, its state finance is in challenge, it is for the central Government and the state government to come together to find solutions for the people of Meghalaya, to work for the benefit and development for the people of Meghalaya and that is our current priority and that should be the priority of all the constructive parties in Meghalaya politics,” Sinha said.
Talking to reporters after holding meetings with Meghalaya BJP leaders and candidates, the BJP National Secretary said, the support that BJP has got from the people of Meghalaya has grown since 2018.
“ We have seen a large number of people joining our party; we could field candidates in all the 60 assembly segments. The kinds of crowds that have turned up for the BJP events are recorded on camera. So obviously our support base has grown,” he added.
The party will introspect to know how and what more can be done for strengthening the party, he informed.
