Amidst the shortage of power in the state, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday held a meeting with officials of Power Dept. to discuss the proposed interventions to set up plants for renewable energy or solar parks and waste processing plants in the state.
The days of load-shedding in Meghalaya are far from over with regulated power cuts for minimum 7 hours a day added to the woes of the residents.
With Power cuts scheduled from 12 midnight to 5 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m, the residents of parts of Meghalaya including Garo Hills, Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills are severe problem amidst heat wave like situation
Meghalaya currently has a power availability of 88 million units against a demand of 200 million units. Therefore, the state is having a shortfall of 112 million units of power with several power projects shut down.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also had discussions with Global Himalayan Expedition on plans to continue the collaboration for solar electrification of villages and health centres, clean cookstoves, digital learning for our children in rural areas and proposals to set up LED assembly lines for local solar products.
The Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “The local team of young men and women trained by GHE has completed solar electrification of 400 households, provided 5000 clean cookstoves and continue to handhold communities to their empowerment.”
