Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has requested the Centre to include both Khasi and Garo language in the 8th schedule of the constitution.
Asserting that this may be the reason why the Tribals of North-eastern India is not going at par with the rest of the country, the Minister told Meghalaya News 24, “The Government of India today must recognise, must realise that every tribe, every language, every dialogue is important.”
While pointing out that non recognition of languages in 8th schedule hindering progress of Tribals of Northeast, Sangma said may be this is the reason why the Tribals of North-eastern India are not going at par with the rest of the country.
“……. it will bring up our society, our students to perform better in the competitive exams. It will bring up the standard, maybe this is the reason why the Tribals of North-eastern India are not going at par with the rest of the country,” Sangma said.
The Education Minister further said, “Languages should be recognised…….both the languages from the State should be included in the 8th Schedule of the constitution.”
Welcoming the decision of Ministry of Home Affairs to include Garo language in the list of languages demanding 8th schedule inclusion, he stated that for both Garo and the Khasi, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly have adopted a resolution and it’s the aspiration of the people of the state.
“In the last five years , the Govt of India under the Prime Minister Modi many development has be establish, I wish if centre considers it at priority, it will be greatest blessings to the state,” the Minister said.
