Use technology to address concern over illegal immigration: Pala

Congress chief and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala said there is need to use technology for addressing the concern over the issue of influx and illegal immigration.

“We have to use technology and that technology should be fair, transparent and it should be pragmatic,” Pala said.

He said setting up check gates should not be a problem but how we check that is the problem.

“If you use technology, I don’t think there is a problem. For example, like national highways, we have check gates everywhere but they use technology then everybody (can have the option to) either go for pre-paid or pay by cash or whatever,” Pala said.

The MP said similarly for (checking) infiltration, technology is needed as it is not possible to conduct physical checking. “Before may be 10 trucks in a day but today there are 10,000 trucks in a day. Therefore, physical checking is not possible nowadays. We have to evolve…I don’t think there will be a problem if they use check gates or anything provided they use a system where it is humanly possible.”

He also said that “If you go to other countries, they give you a Visa and a Visa is not human checking, we just put our passport and the Visa and they will scan the QR code and everything will come and they will know whether it is genuine or not genuine.”

“Same thing for infiltration, ILP or any other if they use technology (which ensures) every resident will apply online and get it online and when they come to the checkgate they just put it in and they can go,” he said.

Pala said even in parliament nowadays they are using technology for face recognition of MPs – that is linked to Aadhaar – on entering the parliament.
