All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Friday said the Congress is free to examine the decision of the 12 MLAs to merge with the party.

“Legally, they (Congress) are most welcome to examine, there is no problem in that,” said the secretary of the parliamentary party Himalaya Shangpliang.

He was reacting to a statement made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge Meghalaya Manish Chatrath that the legal team of the party would look into the matter if any legal action will be taken against the 12 MLAs.

Shangpliang however maintained that the decision to merge with the new party was done after they had duly consulted the Constitution of India.

“We have just submitted the paper after examining the documents. Our legal team has done their due diligence in preparing the paper and document for us. We have also duly consulted the Constitution of India every paragraph relevant has been confirmed with,” he added.

He further informed that the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh had also referred to the paragraph mentioned in their letter submitted to him on November 24.

“The Speaker himself had turned the pages of the Constitution of India and he seemed satisfied with that and that is how he has allowed us to come with all the 12 members in front of him and has asked us to sign the attendance.

Therefore, I think legally we are on the right track and there is nothing wrong with our documents or our papers,” Shangpliang stated.
