Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong has maintained that there is a huge shortage of manpower in the police force.
Holding a review meeting of the police department on Friday, Tynsong said that personal interviews are being conducted to fill up over 1000 vacant posts.
“We have a huge shortage of manpower and we already calculated today in the conference, it is not less than 3500 to 4000,” the Deputy CM said.
“So today we have taken a decision that right now we do have drive for appointment of different category of police in the state of Meghalaya .Drive to fill about 1000 plus vacant posts under different categories is currently being conducted, the personal interview is still on and it will be over in another 2-3 weeks,” he added.
While assuring that the process of filling up the vacancies in the police department will be completed within this year, the deputy Chief Minister said after the completion of the personal interviews, the next session of recruitment drive will immediately take place.
He further assured the state Government will ensure better policing and boost the morale of the police besides maintaining the law and order.
Stating that there are 16,000 police personnel, the Deputy Chief Minister incharge of Home (Police) said there is a need to discuss how to create new sanctions.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi said the law-and-order situation is more or less under control as most of the crimes at the district-level are not directly related to law and order.
Talking to reporters at the SPs and Commanders level conference, the DGP said, “Fortunately, militancy is at its lowest level, and whatever remnant groups are there, they are in the peace process, they are talking with the centre interlocutors, so there are not many problems as of today. However, future challenges will remain, and for that we are trying to strengthen our law-and-order branch.”
