The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is likely to introduce Artificial intelligence in the next session which will enable the member to speak in their own mother tongue inside the House.
Informing this, Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, said the assembly is seeking assistance from relevant agencies and experts to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the upcoming session.
He informed that from the next session, Artificial intelligence will be put in place that will aid in live translation of the languages spoken inside the house.
Speaking to Mediapersons, Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma said, “This Assembly will allow members to speak in their own respective languages (or) mother tongue, which will (then be) translated into English.”
Asked, he said, “We are trying to put things together so probably next session, we will be able to do it in full swing.”
Asked, Sangma said, “We have three basic languages – Khasi, Jaintia and Garo – they (legislators) can speak. There is no restriction for anybody to speak in their own mother tongue, basically from these three tribes only.”
Sangma also informed that the Assembly has invited artificial intelligence (AI) experts to witness the proceedings of the upcoming budget session, to be held from February 16.
“They (AI experts) will try to assist or guide us on how we can go about it,” he added.
Asked if the state Assembly will go paperless, the speaker said more than 60-70 percent of members have agreed but the process needs time to implement.
“I think more than 60-70% paperless. Most of the members have agreed to accept the notices, everything on their emails or WhatsApp or other mediums so we don’t need to send them notices on paper,” he added.
