Bernard to be produce before court on Friday; CM rules out Independent inquiry


BJP Vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N Sangma will be produced before the court on Friday.

Sources informed that Police likely to seek further extension of the police custody of Bernard.

The court of chief judicial magistrate on July 28 has remanded BJP Vice President and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak to eight days police custody.

It may be mentioned that Bernard alias Rimpu was picked up from Hapur city of Uttar Pradesh, after a lookout notice led to his arrest.

A case under sections of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, 1956 was registered against him with the Tura women police station.

On July 22, West Garo Hills police had busted a prostitution racket in the private farm house run by the BJP MDC which led to the arrest of 73 persons and rescue of 5 children besides seizure of liquors and unused contraceptives.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has ruled out State BJP’s demand for an independent inquiry into the alleged ‘harassment’ faced by BJP party workers in West Garo Hills.

“There is no question of any independent probe, the investigation is going on and as the investigation go on the facts are coming out, there is no reason for any independent inquiry,” Sangma told reporters in Shillong.

Following the arrest of BJP Vice President and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak, the state BJP has alleged that the Tura police are targeting their party members illegally and questioning them for hours.

State BJP president Ernest Mawrie met Governor Satyapal Mallik on Monday demanding removal of West Garo hills Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. Even as the State BJP demanded independent inquiry into the alleged ‘harassment’ faced by BJP party workers in West Garo Hills.
