In a major breakthrough, the East Khasi Hills Police, in a coordinated operation between Sohra Police Station and the Special Cell, apprehended a bike theft gang that had been operating for weeks. Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, confirmed the arrest of five individuals involved in stealing and smuggling motorcycles to Bangladesh.
“After pursuing a bike theft gang for the past few weeks, in a well-coordinated effort by Sohra PS and Special Cell EKH, two bike thieves, Babu Marak (19) of Dalia Shella and Sunday N. Sangma (30) of Samanda, East Garo Hills, were intercepted yesterday evening at Sohra Rim. They were riding a Suzuki Gixxer bike (ML 05 AD 4393) stolen which was to be sold to receivers in Bangladesh. The duo had received the bike in Mawkdok from another group involved in lifting bikes from the city,” Syiem stated.
Following the arrests, a swift follow-up operation led to the capture of three more individuals—Barabor Namsaw (28) of Jirang, Patharkhmah, Banroilang Iawrod (19) of Kynbahmalai, Phlangwambroi, Mawsynram, and Declin Warjri (20) of Nongmensong, Shillong—at 7th Mile, East Khasi Hills. The trio, involved in multiple bike theft cases, was found in possession of a stolen scooty.
Meanwhile, police efforts at Sohra continued, leading to the discovery of another stolen bike—a Yamaha R15 (ML 05 AA 3297) that had been reported stolen from Mawiong Umjapung on February 23. The suspects abandoned the bike at Nongsawlia and managed to escape.
The arrested individuals are being produced under Madanrting PS Case No. 31(02)25 U/S 303(2) BNS. Authorities are intensifying efforts to track down other members of the network involved in the racket.
