SHILLONG, OCT 17: Senior Meghalaya BJP leader AL Hek said that the party will be contesting the upcoming Gambegre bye-elections. He informed that the state leadership will travel to Delhi on October 21 to meet with central leadership and discuss potential candidates.
Speaking to reporters in Shillong, Hek confirmed that the party would soon reveal its official candidate for the bye-poll.
“Once they apply, the party will make the best decision on whom to give the ticket. Also, we are going for a meeting in Delhi on October 21. We also have had virtual discussions with the leaders to set up the candidates for the bye-election,” he added.
He emphasized that the BJP is committed to competing in the Gambegre bye-election, noting that there are typically two to three aspirants for the party ticket. Hek mentioned that once the applications are submitted, the party will carefully consider who will receive the nomination. He also highlighted that they have held virtual discussions with party leaders to prepare for the election.
The final decision on the candidate will be made after the meeting with the central leadership in Delhi. Hek acknowledged past criticisms regarding the BJP’s timing in announcing candidates, indicating that this time, the party leadership has organized discussions in advance to ensure a timely decision.
“I fully endorse what you are saying that BJP announced its candidates very late. This time they have called us to discuss, so we will discuss and after that only, we will finalise the candidate for the Gambegre bye election,” he added.
When asked about the party’s campaign strategy, Hek stated that the BJP will focus on the achievements of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the various schemes implemented for the welfare of the poorest citizens. He reiterated that the party’s success ultimately depends on the voters’ choices.
