Shillong, Dec 20: Meghalaya Education Minister, Rakkam A. Sangma, on Friday said the newly established Captain Williamson Sangma State University will house a dedicated Department of Tribal Studies. This department will play a crucial role in preserving and promoting the state’s endangered dialects and tribal languages.
“We are committed to safeguarding our cultural heritage through education,” Minister Sangma affirmed, emphasizing the government’s dedication to this cause. “The inclusion of a Tribal Studies department is a significant step forward in this endeavor.”
The Vice-Chancellor has been tasked with prioritizing the establishment of key departments and the initiation of academic activities. The university is poised to commence academic classes in 2025, while simultaneously beginning the process of affiliating colleges.
Addressing the matter of college affiliations, Minister Sangma stated, “We are currently evaluating the best approach for the university to function as an affiliating institution. A definitive decision on this will be made soon.”
Additionally, Minister Sangma revealed plans to propose land allocation in New Shillong Township for the establishment of a university campus in the state capital. The process of securing AICTE approval is currently underway.
