Former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope is likely to be appointed as president of the newly formed All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in Meghalaya.

Sources in the party informed Meghalaya News 24 that the name of Pyngrope has been submitted to the party high command for consideration.

A delegation led by AITC legislature party leader Dr Mukul Sangma on Sunday left for Kolkata to meet the party supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday at her Khalighat residence at 2pm.

“We are going to have further detailed discussion on the future of the party in our state,” secretary of the legislature party,” AITC source informed.

When asked, he had informed that the president of the state party will be announced once they return from Kolkata.

The decision of the 12 MLAs to merge with the AITC came as a big jolt to the Congress which is now left with only 5 MLAs in the 60-member House.

With this, the AITC became the principal opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
