Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced the formation of district-level committees to monitor the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and address various local issues, including cleanliness, water management, and the drug menace. These committees will be led by Additional Deputy Commissioners (ADCs) in different districts, starting with Shillong, Tura, and Jowai.
Chief Minister Sangma stated, “We have just notified committees that will be headed by ADCs of different districts, including Shillong, where we will have members from different localities, including headmen, rongbahshnongs, and development committees. The mandate will be to not only address the drug issue within localities but also to monitor the implementation of MRSSA, look into cleanliness, and manage water-related issues. This is a comprehensive approach that we are adopting at the district level, beginning with Shillong, Tura, and Jowai.”
He further emphasized that the committees would focus on various aspects of community welfare, including drug rehabilitation and other related concerns, highlighting the need for collective effort to combat these issues.
In response to allegations made by Vincent H Pala, President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, and Mukul Sangma, Leader of the Opposition, accusing the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) of using illegal funds from drugs and coal, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma strongly refuted the claims. He labeled the accusations as “anti-national” and baseless.
“The allegations made are completely baseless. It is unfortunate that responsible leaders at that level would make such statements without any basis or factual evidence. To accuse individuals of being involved in drugs is not just wrong but anti-national in its entirety. The government has worked tirelessly over the past three years to curtail drug trafficking, and we will continue to intensify our efforts in the coming days,” Sangma asserted.
