Chief Secretary D.P Wahlang on Thursday chaired a disaster department review meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of various districts and the officials from different departments via video conferencing as the monsoon rainfall lashes Meghalaya.
Chairing the meeting, the Chief Secretary sought updates from all district administrations regarding the extent of damage to roads and its impact on connectivity, the progress of relief distribution, and the current financial status related to relief efforts.
Further, Wahlang specifically requested the Deputy Commissioner to provide updates on road connectivity, damage to houses, and the allocation of relief funds. Following the Deputy Commissioner’s briefing, Wahlang expressed satisfaction and appreciation for the efforts made so far.
He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant regarding local issues arising from the rains. He noted that the Chief Minister is concerned not only about landslides but also about the impact on roads due to the rainfall.
Furthermore, he urged local engineers to stay vigilant and respond promptly to mitigate any issues caused by the heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, a massive landslide struck the heart of Baghmara town today, causing severe damage to a school building and several shops.
The State Bank of Baghmara is also at risk, with the landslide perilously close to its premises. The incident, which began earlier today, has led to significant destruction in the town center, raising concerns about further potential damage.
Local authorities are currently assessing the situation and coordinating rescue efforts to ensure the safety of residents and mitigate further losses.
Moving to West Garo Hills, at New Bhaitbari under , the panicked residents seek shelter in the camps along the road. With the water level continuing to increase, people living in low lying areas took shelter along with their livestock in the higher ground in an effort to survive the deluge.
