Following reports of pollution at the Ganol River, Minister incharge of Soil & water conservation department Marcuise N Marak on Friday said the cleanup of the river has already begun.
Talking to reporters, Marak said, the district administration in coordination with the municipal board, NGOs and Rongram Bazaar committee are cleaning up the garbage in the river.
“The district administration in collaboration with the Municipal board started cleaning up the garbages that are flowing through the Ganol river and the district administration has already directed the Bazaar committees of the Rongram Bazaar area, so they will be cleaning it,” Marak said.
“In collaboration with some other NGOs they are doing the cleaning drive,” the Minister said.
According to media reports, the West Garo Hills (WGH) administration has decided to levy a fine of Rs 1 Lakh on Rongram Bazaar Committee, as the committee has failed to ensure that the waste does not get dumped into the river and affect the ecosystem. The fine amount will be utilised for improving cleanliness of the market.
